Consider bringing belly dancers to your next party, gala, festival, or event. Tribal style bellydance, also known as American Tribal Style or ATS, is a group imporvised dance form that originated in America in the late 1980's. The dance uses a vocabulary of over 90 moves plus turns, level changes, and variations. Dancers communicate the moves non-verbally using specific cues and formations. It is comprised of a conglomeration of dance styles from around the world throughout the ages. There are aspects of West African, Egyptian, Moroccan, Tunisian, Arabic, Turkish, Gypsy/Roma, Spanish, Indian, and other Middle Eastern cultural moves displayed in a modern fashion sometimes even involving forms of breakdance such as liqui-forming, popping and locking. Some choreographies are also used, however this is considered "fusion" since tribal requires improvisation. The dance is continually evolving.

Meet the Troupe
Nomadic Magic Tribal Dance began in August 2007 with Roma's classes at the Art Institute & Gallery. It is the first and only all tribal bellydance troupe on the Eastern Shore. Roma is Gypsy Caravan Certified and teaches and directs her students based on the tribal vocabulary using improvisational cues and formations giving this dance its unique and captivating feel. Tribal is a dance you can take with you anywhere and practice with anyone. You can see "Roma and the Nomads" perform at Namaste Indian Cuisine or at various events on the shore.
Roma
Roma began bellydancing in Arizona in 2003 after being exposed to it at festivals and events. She was immediately drawn to tribal style after seeing a duet performed in perfect synchronicity. She took classes at Domba studios in Tempe. When she moved to Maryland in 2005 she joined a local troupe and appeared on television and performed all over the Delmarva Peninsula. She served as publicity director for Arabian Lights Dance Company.
She began teaching tribal style bellydance in 2007 at the Art Institute & Gallery. She continued to train with Fat Chance & Gypsy Caravan DVD's and workshops with other tribal dancers. The troupe, Nomadic Magic was formed soon after classes began. Classes organize bellydance moves into levels with cues for group improvisation. After about a year the group began performing monthly at Namaste Indian Cuisine in Salisbury, MD.
Roma got her Gypsy Caravan certification in 2009 and yoga and Pilates certifications in 2011. There are 4 different levels according to the vocabulary of moves, cues, layers, turns, combos, and variations. Tribal continues to grow and be defined. It is an evolving dance that seeks to link history, culture, art, dance, and nature.

Sephira (October, 2007)
Sephira started belly dancing in Jan. '07, but didn't start tribal dancing until Oct. '07. She thought it sounded fun, so decided to try it and have been hooked ever since. She heard about classes over at Merritt and then at AI&G, where she had previously been taking pottery classes there and was on the mailing list. It's fun because it's all improv and you don't have to have a set routine. Sephira loves the costumes, especially the coin belts, and hip scarves! She is also skilled at ballroom dance, Irish Step Dance, Pole Dance, and is a long-time practitioner of yoga and pilates.
Fran (August, 2007)
Fran's interest in belly dancing goes back to the early 1980's when she took a class in cabaret dancing while living in England. She renewed her interest when she took Basic Tribal Dancing with Roma in 2007. The elegant and deceptively simple moves, as well as the pure fun of dancing appeal to her. A serious equestrian, Fran finds the flexibility and muscle isolation required for dancing help her as a rider. The tribal troupe concept and improvisation of dancing with friends stir a deep emotional contact with the spirit of all women, past and present, around the world.
